CHESTERFIELD COUNTY MUSEUM

Built as a replica of the first Chesterfield County Courthouse (1749), the Museum design was selected in 1976 as the American Bicentennial project for the county.

The Museum opened July 4th, 1980, and it contains three galleries:

The Story of Chesterfield County Gallery

Depicts the history of the area between the James and the Appomattox Rivers from the era of Pre-Contact through today and features illustrated panels and displays. Chronicles of early English settlements, the cultivation of tobacco, the first iron works and coal mines in North America, Revolutionary War, and African American histories are featured.

The General Store

A reproduction of a typical Chesterfield country store at the turn of the 20th century that served as the hub of the county's rural community. Complete with service counter, historic cash register, and store ledgers, the shelves are laden with early 1900's artifacts.

The Rotating Exhibit Gallery

Displays temporary exhibits recognizing aspects of history specific to Chesterfield County.
