Revolutionary War
Patriot Memorial Project
Honor a patriot. Preserve a name.
Become part of Chesterfield’s Revolutionary War legacy.
In December 1780, Chesterfield Courthouse became home to a training barracks for Continental troops. Under the direction of General Friedrich Wilhelm Baron von Steuben, Virginia recruits were organized and trained through a harsh winter that tested their endurance, sacrifice and commitment to the cause of American independence.
Many of these soldiers went on to serve in battles that helped shape the outcome of the Revolutionary War, including Guilford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs and the Siege of Yorktown. Their service is part of Chesterfield County’s story, and their names deserve to be remembered.
The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, in partnership with the Chesterfield County 250th Committee, is creating a Revolutionary War Patriot Memorial Brick Walkway on the Courthouse Green to honor these soldiers and preserve their legacy for future generations.
Sponsor a Memorial Brick
With a donation of $100, you can sponsor a memorial brick engraved with the name of a Revolutionary War patriot who was from Chesterfield County or served at Chesterfield Barracks during the winter of 1780–1781.
Each brick will become part of a permanent walkway honoring the soldiers who endured the hardships of Chesterfield Barracks, remembered as “The Valley Forge of the South.”
